Ludacris couldn't contain his excitement for years winning Best Rap album at the Grammys, which he did when Release therapy topped the rap Grammy mountain at the 2007 ceremony.
Luda let his emotions spill out backstage as he celebrated loudly with his team, which Justin Timberlake apparently heard in the next room, as the *NSYNC singer told the Atlanta rapper to shut up.
The Chicken-n-Beer The rhymer joined Sean Evans for an episode Hot on Thursday (April 18) and detailed the backstage feud with Timberlake after it resurfaced and went viral earlier this year.
“The internet went a little crazy with it. He certainly meant it, but it wasn't a curse. It was behind the curtain and I was celebrating so openly and I was so loud,” Ludacris explained. “I think it was said more in fun, but there was definitely some truth behind it. Like, “Okay, the show isn't over. Stop celebrating so openly, I haven't won anything yet.' With a smile on his face something like that.”
Ludacris pulled up Drink Champs in February, where he expanded into mixing with JT backstage. “Right now, they had all the artists separated by curtains, so the moms weren't in specific rooms. I say that to say that I come back and say, “Yes! F— yes! I made it! I did it! I won! I literally set out to get a Grammy and I got it!” he said.
“Suddenly, I hear this voice from the other side of the curtain. They shout, “Shut the f—! Some of us didn't win any God—n Grammys today!” I pull back the curtain and this Justin Timberlake is on the other side of this mom.”
Best Rap album wasn't the only material Ludacris took home at the '07 Grammys: The Pharrell-assisted “Money Maker” also won Best Rap Song.
Ludacris thought of setting a goal to set Release therapy so undeniable that the Recording Academy had to give him a Grammy trophy.
“The reason was that it was all these years, I mean it was a good nine or 10 years, I was in the same category as a solo male rap artist with Eminem, 50 Cent, DMX, Jay-Z. So I finally got to a point [where] I was so consistent that I just built that momentum and finally had my time,” Ludacris said.
“That was probably one of the – if not the best – moments in my career to literally start and make sure I had a goal and to achieve that goal … It meant everything to me.”
Release therapy debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 upon its release in September 2006, with 309,000 albums sold in its first week.
Elsewhere in Luda Hot test — which he flunks — the rapper reveals he's in a relationship with legendary comedian Richard Pryor and recalls Ben Stiller inviting him to a private screening of tropical storm to get his permission to use 'Get Back' in the film.
