Lupe Fiasco, Chicago's own, returns with another anticipated banger. “Samurai,” his latest album, delves into a slow-flowing jazz wave infused with story-driven wordplay. Mainly produced by a long-term partner Soundtrack (known for hits like “Superstar” and “Kick, Push”), co-produced by Kush Baby, the 8-track album showcases Lupe's evolution.
In this project, Lupe weaves a personal narrative through rap-jazz and neo-soul, combining fast-paced rapping with introspective lyricism. Tracks like “Samurai” and “Mumble Rap” offer smooth hip-hop flows, while “Cake”, “Palaces” and “No.1 Headband” explore the lyrical depth and soulful choruses of neo-jazz.
Lupe, who once explained that “the word 'samurai' means to serve,” has undoubtedly delivered on his promise. The album's cohesive mix of genres and moving lyrics enhance its impact.
Album Rating: 10/10
