Maggie Rogers longs for simple pleasures and eternal life through memories on her latest single, “Don't Forget Me,” the first release from her upcoming third studio album, Do not forget mereleased April 12.
“The song is a rough diary entry about going to a bunch of friends' weddings and feeling so happy for them, but also realizing that I'm just in a different place in my life,” Rogers shared in a statement. “I've joked with my friends that it's a song about having low expectations, but I really think it's about longing for simple baselines – a good lover or someone who's good to me. When it comes down to it, our memories and relationships are all we have. I don't have many questions, but I want my time on this earth to add up to something. So that everything is worth it in the end.”
He added: “I think remembering someone can be the greatest form of love because when we remember, the love continues. When I stand at the end of my life, I hope I have a lifetime of accumulated love left.” Throughout the song, Rogers is willing to give up her money and peaceful Sundays at home if it means the love around her can withstand almost anything.
It's an ethos distilled by the singer and songwriter Do not forget me, which features 10 songs that channel the warmth of intimacy. “In a lot of ways, it feels like I'm coming home, back to the music and songwriting that got me hooked when I started making art in my bedroom when I was 16,” he explained. “My friends keep saying it sounds like the version of me they know. Something looser, dumber or sillier than I've shown in public before.'
The album, Rogers added, was co-produced by her and Ian Fitchuk, who also wrote eight songs. It originally existed as a collection of demos that would later be recorded with a full band, but her creative process completely changed when she realized that trying too hard to mold it into a single thing was taking away from its emotional core. The album was written chronologically over five days: three in December 2022 and two in January 2023. “Don't Forget Me” was the final piece of the puzzle.
“I think it's inherent that we give and take from each other. And that even with all the best intentions there can be some disaster – take my money, ruin my Sundays. There are simple things that I think we would all give up for love. I think it's just that we want our sacrifices or suffering to have meaning. So that everything is not forgotten. Do not you forget me,” Rogers shared. “This was such a transformative and special time in my life. I am so grateful for many years of support and care that offered to let me do this in my own way and on my own time. I can honestly say that I am fitter than ever… and most importantly, I am having a blast. I hope you love this record as much as I do.”
Do not forget me follows Rogers' second studio album Traditionwhich arrived in 2022.
