When it comes to birthday serenades, having Mariah Carey sing to you is pretty hard to beat. Da Brat knows this firsthand after Songbird Supreme performed a snippet of an unreleased track the pair apparently worked on in honor of the rapper's 50th birthday on Sunday (April 14) — watch a clip below.
In a video sent to the talk show Dish Nation — co-hosted by Da Brat — Mimi sang a few bars of an untitled track that she later claimed producer LT Hutton “lost.”
“It's driving me crazy, because you make me sad every minute,” she screamed. “I'm crying every second/ Why should I, why should I go on?”
“You know the song, Tat Tat,” Carey told her longtime friend and collaborator after she finished. “This is our song and LT Hutton lost it. Where are you? Where did you put that song?'
“I love you so much, happy birthday,” she added. “They told me the number. I don't do numbers. I don't know what it is, I don't remember any of it.”
Born Shawntae Harris, Da Brat has covered many of the “We Belong Together” singer's tracks — including remixes of Carey's “Heartbreaker,” “Loverboy” and “Always Be My Baby,” to name a few. Responding to her famous friend's message, the hip-hop pioneer said, “It was beautiful… Oh Shug, I love you, MC.”
The day marked Da Brat's first birthday as a mum after welcoming a baby boy named True Legend with wife Jesseca Harris-Dupart in July last year. “I can't believe it came out of me! It feels like a dream,” said the Grammy-nominated artist People at that time. “He is perfect in every way. This journey has been more amazing than we could have imagined.”
