Renowned house music DJ and producer Mark Knight has won the coveted Icon Award at the 2024 Electronic Dance Music Awards.
It's a well-deserved victory for Knight, a pioneer whose record label, Toolroom, has deeply influenced the dance music industry for two decades. The label, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, has been a launching pad for countless artists since its inception in 2003.
Thanks to Knight's cerebral approach to production, the solid ground beneath his music's feet has always been infused with soul. In addition to his bottomless chasm of generational house anthems, Knight's remix work has also been instrumental, reinventing classics like Avicii's “My Feelings For You” and giving them new life for a modern audience.
“My entire career in music has been driven by my love of music,” Knight says. EDM.com. “That's why I got into this and why I still do it today. For me it was never about awards, but the fact that people have recognized my passion and contribution to music is incredibly overwhelming and I would like to say a big thank you to the EDMA and each and every one of the people who have supported me throughout my career.
The EDMAs are predominantly considered today's biggest awards show for the eponymous genre. Powered by its fan-based voting system, the MTV-style ceremony hands out unique souvenir trophies, which resemble DJ platforms and feature a functional selection wheel.
Last year's celebration in Miami saw wins from Martin Garrix, Zedd, NERVO and trance legend Armin van Buuren, among many other notable electronic music artists.
“These praises are a great motivation for me because they mean that the fans really care,” van Buuren said at the time. “They see you, they hear you and they enjoy your music, which is why I do this.”
The EDMA 2024 ceremony is scheduled for Friday, March 22 at the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami. Several of the country's leading radio stations will broadcast the event both on-air and digitally.
