Mark Knopfler has teamed up with a host of guitar legends to record a cover of his song “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)” to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Adolescent cancer in America.
The Dire Straits leader chose Eric Clapton, Slash (Guns N' Roses), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Brian May (Queen), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Pete Townshend (The Who), Alex Lifeson (RUSH) ,Bruce. Springsteen, Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Joan Jett and many more, forming what he has called “Mark Knopfler's Guitar Heroes.” Notably, the star-studded version begins with the last guitar track recorded by the late Jeff Beck.
Knopfler's longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher produced the song, which may be the largest gathering of guitar talent to coexist on a single song. He Sergeant. PepperThe style artwork was created by Sir Peter Blake (The Beatles, The Who, Band Aid).
A 15-second preview clip can now be heard, showing the crowd of guitarists trading runs and fills. Additional instrumentation was provided by Roger Daltrey of The Who (honorary patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust and co-founder of Teen Cancer America with Townshend) on harmonica; Ringo Starr of the Beatles swaps drums with his son Zak Starkey; and Sting completing the bass rhythm section.
“What I really want to do, more than anything else, is thank each and every one for this great response,” Knopfler said of the large number of contributors at the track. “I really had no idea it was going to be like this. hit boy [Fletcher] And from the beginning I understood that we had to expand this part in some way, to cover the number of people who joined.”
He continued: “Before I knew where I was, Pete Townshend had walked into my studio armed with a guitar and an amplifier. And that first chord from Pete… man, I'm telling you. We were in that territory and it was just fantastic. And it continued from there. Eric [Clapton] Came in, played great, just one tasty lick after another. Then came Jeff Beck's contribution and it was fascinating. I think what we've had is a real embarrassment of riches. “Everything was a highlight.”
The full song will be released digitally (including a Dolby Atmos mix) on March 15 along with physical versions on CD, deluxe CD/Blu-Ray, and vinyl. Proceeds benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America, and you can pre-order the single through Mark Knopfler's Guitar Heroes. website.
