Marshmello's new album, The rootsmarks more than an ordinary return. It's a journey that dares to evoke both the innocence and intensity of his rise in the late 2010s, while also embracing the maturity he's gained along the way.
Mello orchestrates a dance between the past and the present in The roots,, weaving a web of euphoric highs and hypnotic lows while weaving memories of his meteoric trajectory with modern complexity. Album opener “Just Can't Stop” sets the stage with a mesmerizing combination of bright, vibrant synths and punchy drums, radiating an intensity that feels like sunlight trapped in the sound.
He taps Viperactive for another standout, “In The Cut,” a riotous, percussion-driven assault on the senses. The track wastes no time, galloping forward with wild snares that rise and collide with chaotic grace as Viperactive brings a ferocity that blends beautifully with Marshmello's polished sound. Elsewhere, in “Fired Up,” Marshmello works alongside Hamdi. He finds a willing co-pilot in EDM.com's Class of 2024 breakout, which combines the thrills of British dubstep with his own brand of nostalgic trap.
And then there's “Bad Boys,” an explosive collaboration with Trickstar and the eternal Lil Jon, a song that's a storm of barking vocals and gunning bass. Marshmello's digitized synths bounce with a wicked grin, dancing dangerously around Lil Jon's call to arms. It's a reminder that even embracing nostalgia, Mello isn't afraid to burn down expectations and build something wild from the ashes.
During the release, he has not forgotten the emotional gravity that music can contain. A look at a previously unreleased collaboration with Juice WRLD on Kai Cenat's recent livestream felt like a voice echoing through time: a poignant reminder of what was lost and a bittersweet assurance that his creative legacy remains enduring.
