The past is prologue in the case of ZOCASOMat Zo's new EP Anjunabeats, a true example of his unwavering will to produce challenging electronic music.
Zo is one of the most famous artists on the illustrious electronic label Above & Beyond, who released his debut album, Damage controlin 2013. That record included “Easy,” a collaboration with Porter Robinson that remains a generational dance anthem.
True to his style, ZOCASO It’s not background noise for the faint of heart, it’s a full-contact sport for the ears, a labyrinth where each track stretches beyond the eight-minute mark. He weaves a cocoon of vintage electro and techno into these songs, each of which is a miniature universe unto itself.
Zo fans know that the beauty of his music lies in the details. It starts with “Relic of the Future,” where his mastery of sound design shines through with propulsive, textured production. One moment you’re floating between cosmic synth tracks, and the next you’re plunged into a centrifuge of harsh electro.
The producer's meticulous attention to stereo imaging and frequency spectrum manipulation is evident on the following “Bluish Yellow,” a lysergic, thrilling track that could be the soundtrack to a dizzying trip. Fear and Loathing in Las VegasHere, complex arrangements and dynamic builds culminate in cathartic rhythms of progressive house. Then it closes ZOCASO with “This Too Shall Pass,” a glitchy, energetic techno that refuses to let up until its atmospheric coda.
The EP takes its name from Zo's audiovisual concept “ZOCASE”, which he premiered at Aures London on June 29, 2023 before touring North America. Now he's ready for a big event. showcase at New York City's famous Irving Plaza on December 6.
