Belanova singer Denisse Guerrero vividly remembers how she felt after performing “Rosa Pastel” with Carla Morrison in Mexico City last November. It was her first time on stage in years, and she wasn't sure if she would ever return to performing full-time.
“I walked off the stage and it was cathartic,” says Guerrero. “I felt so good both biologically and in my soul. [Singing] es lo mío [is my thing] and making music helps you heal.”
Six years after the era-defining pop trio's last tour, Belanova is back. Rolling rock can exclusively announce that the group will return to the US on a 12-date Vida en Rosa tour later this spring.
The tour, titled Vida en Rosa, is being produced by LiveNation and will see Belanova – consisting of Guerrero, keyboardist Edgar Huerta and bassist Ricardo Arreola – stop in cities including Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix and Miami Beach. (Apart from the tour, the band will also perform at P'al Norte, Mexico City's Vive Latino and Austin's edition of Bésame Mucho in March.)
“I wanted to focus on the gratitude I have for our audience,” says Guerrero. “As an artist, you do everything in your nature to concentrate and write a song, but sometimes you wonder if no one cares. The fact that people lend us their ears is incredible.”
The tour arrives as a new generation of Latin pop listeners discovered the group's music — sugary, synth-pop songs like “Cada Que,” “Por Ti,” “Niño” and “Me Pregunto” — on TikTok, while the older generation of Belanova fans have reconnected with the group's lyricism and nostalgia. (Younger Mexican pop stars, including Danna Paola, have also cited the group's unique, bubbly sound as inspiration for their own sound.)
“Recently I saw that my little neighbors had a party and were singing 'Rosa Pastel' a todo pulmón. It was so cool to see,” says Huerta.
“It makes me so happy to see that new generations are listening to our music,” adds Arreola. “We're lucky people haven't forgotten about us.”
Still, Guerrero is honest: She wasn't sure if she was ready to return to the team. “But I owe it to the audience,” he says. “I was going through existential crises and many times I thought, 'What if I had a different career or job?' But I realized it [performing] it's also good for my health.”
Guerrero says she's looking forward to seeing the response to the tour at a time when Latin music has taken over world stages. He points to the success of Peso Pluma and Karol G. (They both won Grammys on Sunday.) “Before, we would rarely be recognized,” he says. Guerrero also says she's a “huge fan” of Cali Uchi and asked a friend to bring her a Uchi vinyl pressing Orchids from the US “I love what he does,” he says.
The new tour will see the group perform songs from their stacked discography – their seventh and final album, Viaje al Centro del Corazón, arrived in 2018. Belanova also has no plans to return to the studio or release new music anytime soon. (“Personally as an artist and as a person, I'm just getting down to earth,” says Guerrero.)
“Time will tell and we'll see how things develop,” explains Guerrero. “I don't think there will be an album, at least for now.”
“It's like coming back from summer vacation,” adds Huerta. “There are some nerves about getting back on stage.”
tickets for the Vida en Rosa tour will go on sale to the general public on Friday, February 9, with fans having access to pre-sale tickets starting Tuesday.
