Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy join Kyle Meredith to discuss the ins and outs of covering REM's 1983 debut. Murmurfor a tour in February.
The three talk about what inspired the project and how to find REM's album. Document When they were younger they guided them in their youth. “I guess one of my favorite hobbies [in high school] I was kind of shuffling around listening to my Walkman CD player,” Shannon says. “And half the time there was probably a REM CD in there. It was not music that was played in the barrel; It was lonely. “I found it comforting.”
Shannon talks about the challenges of deciphering Michael Stipe's lyrics, while Narducy jokes about Peter Buck's most difficult guitar parts. The pair also express that they plan to play more than just REM's debut, with their follow-up sophomore LP, Estimate, also receiving prominence. Shannon is also thinking about making another album with her band Corporal.
