Mike Will Made-It is gearing up to release his first album since 2017 R3setwhich doubles as his third installment Ransom series.
The CEO of Ear Drummers talks to Bulletin board for his upcoming LP, he sheds his music hard drives and reflects on some of his biggest hits over the years, including collaborations with Beyoncé, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and more.
“It's been a journey really. Of Ransom 3. Each Ransom they are different phases. Ransom stands for Releasing All New Songs Orchestrated by Mike Will,” he says.
Around the time Ransom 2 arrived (the project reached No. 24 on the Billboard 200 in 2017), the Atlanta producer had his hard drive and backup stolen, leading him to take a step back from music and explore other endeavors such as real estate.
“At that time I had lost my hard drives. My hard drives were stolen,” he shares. “I really got away from music. I started buying real estate. I bought my studio that I currently work in in Atlanta. When I first got there, there would be a couple of TVs all over the place and we'd just play 2K. I didn't even stumble in the music.
Mike Will continues: “Losing your hard drives and your backup in one was like a wake-up call. I was just trying to figure out what that meant for me. I won a Grammy, I put a lot of people on, so I probably had to start doing other things. Like I should start investing in other areas but nothing really worked. What works for me is music.”
Although R3set currently without a release date, Mike's enlisted an all-star cast of collaborators that includes SZA, Don Toliver, Young Thug, Moneybagg Yo, GloRilla, Yo Gotti, Muni Long and more.
The 35-year-old avid golfer released the project with “High3r” featuring Lil Yachty and Lil Wayne over the summer.
Mike Will Made-It already has a decorated resume that has seen him link up with some of the best music has to offer, including Ye (formerly known as Kanye West), Beyoncé, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and more. Served RiRi's “Pour It Up” as a single from 2012 Unforgivable album; the heady club banger smashed it Billboard Hot 100's top 20.
“My girlfriend, Karen Clark, used to work at Def Jam. He really put it together. Shout out to Chris Brown,'” Mike Will recalled. “He had gone through the writing camp just checking out the different songs. He'd heard “Pour It Up” like “That's gotta get to Ree.” He called the next day, “What's the song Chris is talking about?” He loved it, he put it down.”
