It's official: Miley Cyrus' “Flowers” topped all others in 2023, ending the year as the best-selling single on the planet, the IFPI reports.
Cyrus is presented with the IFPI Global Single Award, which annually recognizes the artist for the best-selling single across all digital formats – including paid subscription streaming, ad-supported platforms and single-track downloads.
The trade body today (February 26) is counting down the top 10 singles of 2023, with Cyrus making her first appearance on the list.
The success of “Flowers” was truly global, as the single simultaneously locked down No. 1 positions in 29 markets worldwide and finished at No. 1 in the year-end charts for the UK, France and Australia.
In the US, “Flowers” showed serious power with an eight-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. That commercial muscle was rewarded at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where Miley performed the song and “Flowers” won best. pop solo act and record of the year – her first Grammys.
Cyrus could have a week to remember at the 2024 BRIT Awards, which take place on Sunday March 3 at The O2 in London, where she's up for International Artist of the Year and 'Flowers' is up for international song.
Presenting the latest award on behalf of the trade body, Lewis Morrison, director of global charts and certifications at the IFPI, comments: “Topping the charts in so many countries at once, the song – along with its message of empowerment – has resonated across the world and is the definition of a truly global success. Congratulations to Miley and her team on this incredible achievement.”
Meanwhile, reigning four-time IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Taylor Swift is the only artist to double in the IFPI top 10, with “Cruel Summer” at No. 7 and “Anti-Hero” at No. 9.
There are first-time appearances for artists from Nigeria (Rema's “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez at No. 2) and Mexico (Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma's “La Bebe” at No. 6), reflecting the border crossing phenomenon of Afrobeats and local Mexican music.
In total, artists representing 10 nationalities (Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, South Korea, UK and USA) influence the top 20, from six nationalities in 2022.
“It's also fantastic to see so many nationalities and genres represented on the IFPI World Single Chart,” Morrison observes. “It's a wonderful reflection of the wide range of outstanding artists who – working with their record companies – are finding international success.”
IFPI's charts record streaming, downloads and physical formats in each country directly from participating labels, which are then converted using the trade body's “unique” methodology into a single, global chart format.
The previous IFPI Global Single Award winner was “As It Was” by Harry Styles.
