M. Ward of She & Him, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes are celebrating the 15th anniversary of their supergroup, Monsters of Folk, and the release of their self-titled album with a new expanded edition that includes five unreleased songs.
Folklore Monsters It originally arrived in September 2009 and features 14 collaborative songs from the group, who began performing together a few years earlier. Now, the new expanded edition will include a batch of songs originally recorded during the 2012 album sessions, including two, “Disappeared” and “Museum Guard,” that were intended for a sci-fi film based on a screenplay by Oberst. . The 15th Anniversary Edition is out June 14 via ATO Records and will be available on digital and vinyl (pre-orders are ongoing). Also appearing on the album are contributions from Will Johnson of Centro-matic. Check out the artwork and tracklist below.
“Making this album brought back the same feelings I had when I started a band or when I started playing music in general,” James said in a statement. “There is a real simplicity and excitement in playing with people you don't normally play with. The spirit of the game is alive in all of this.”
Likewise, Johnson echoed James' sentiment. “That session was very much in the moment,” he said. “I remember watching Jim playing drums on 'Disappeared,' playing joyfully, and harboring the same exuberance of starting your first band: that moment in the garage where things take flight, and the energy and happiness just carry you forward. “
Oberst reflected on the “amazing” experience of making Folklore Monsters furthermore, praising the contributions of James and Ward. “Jim's innovative ability for soul and harmony and M's sense of space and singing were very inspiring and invaluable to me then, and continue to be to this day,” he said.
