Morrissey has claimed that his former Smiths bandmate Johnny Marr “blocked” a planned greatest hits album.
“The Smiths' proposed greatest hits album titled Smith's rule is fine! has been blocked by J Marr,” Morrissey wrote in a statement on their website along with possible album photos and artwork for the single “Hand in Glove.”
Morrissey went on to say that the album and “Hand in Glove” were planned for a worldwide release in 2024 by Warner Records, alongside a deluxe 40th anniversary box set of The Smiths’ self-titled debut album and a new 7-inch of “This Charming Man.”
“Warner approached Morrissey and Darren Evans to gather artwork for the four releases, all of which were immediately rejected and halted by J Marr,” he added.
A few weeks ago, Marr quickly dismissed the idea of a Smiths reunion after a hopeful fan wondered if they could follow Oasis' lead. In response, Morrissey claimed that he accepted a “lucrative offer” to reunite The Smiths in 2025, but Marr turned it down.
Political differences between Marr and Morrissey have long made a potential Smiths reunion unlikely. In 2016, Morrissey's pro-Brexit views sparked a Marr will distance himself from his former bandmate.
Showing his stance has not changed, Marr dismissed a fan's suggestion of a Smiths reunion by sharing a photo of right-wing UK MP Nigel Farage, who Morrissey once suggested was a good candidate for prime minister.
