As talk of weird fan behavior continues to dominate pop music spaces, pop trio Muna is ready to weigh in on the group's experiences.
In a post on the band Instagram stories On Sunday (September 8), the group – made up of Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson – sparked a backlash between some bad actors in their fan base. “We love our fans, but some things have happened recently that we can't keep quiet about,” the statement began.
The group described a pattern of behavior that included “cyberstalking”, “hacking” and “bullying” towards other fan bases and the family of the group members. “Furthermore, the spreading of falsehoods about us and our loved ones for influence and attention on the Internet has been going on for months and we must add [sic] now for our own safety and peace of mind,” the band wrote. “This is really scary for us and it's literally embarrassing to have to post about it, but here we are.”
Closing out their statement, the band said that while they wouldn't put specific fans on the spot by saying their names, “you know who you are. and we do too. cut the f–k.”
Muna joins the pop singer Chapel Roan citing unacceptable behavior from fans online. In August, the singer shared several messages on her social media accounts, setting boundaries with fans who intended to invade her personal space. “I've been involved in far too many non-consensual physical and social interactions and I just need to make this clear and remind you that women don't owe you anything,” she wrote in a lengthy Instagram position. “I chose this career path because because I love music and art and honor my inner child, I don't accept any kind of harassment for choosing this path, nor do I deserve it.”
