MUNA fans, rejoice – your “Prayer” has been answered by Katie Gavin.
On Monday (December 2), Gavin appeared on SiriusXM's The Coffee Housewhere the MUNA frontwoman delivered a restrained, acoustic performance of it MadonnaHis hit single “Like a Prayer”. Putting her own spin on the beloved track, Gavin's new interpretation replaces Madonna's gospel stylings with a folk singer-songwriter sound. Highlighting the song's tender lyrics, the singer closed with the unrepeatable chorus, singing “In the midnight hour, I can feel your power/ Like a prayer, you know I'll take you there.”
Elsewhere in the show, Gavin also performed three songs from her debut solo album What a relief? The lead single “Aftestaste” as well as “Inconsolable” and “Today”. Gavin's latest album, released in October, saw the singer move away from her work with MUNA to pursue a “Lilith Fair-core” sound. “There's a tonal difference that speaks to the scale of things – MUNA has become so ambitious, so the songs have to scale to a certain size,” he said. Bulletin board. “A lot of these songs feel like they live in a much smaller world.”
It's not the first time Gavin has made headlines for a cover in 2024 — during MUNA set of headings at All Things Go NYC in September, the band performed an acoustic cover of Chappell Roan's “Good Luck, Babe” after the singer pulled out of the festival just one day earlier. “We just want to say we love Chappell so much,” Gavin told the crowd before her cover. “We started as a queer band in 2014 and were really given the time and grace we needed to nurture as artists. We wish nothing but a million times for her.”
