Brooklyn-based artist Munchkin Cat ventures into a new realm with the release of his captivating EP, Algorithm.
Former rock musician Munchkin Cat seamlessly fuses various styles of bass music to create a vibrant dance record. Inspired by the worlds of fantasy and gaming, each of the tracks on the EP serves as a gateway between the dark and funky sonic aesthetics.
The EP surprises listeners at every turn, catching them off guard with infectious vocals and ambient melodies on the opening track, as well as harsh bass. The project begins on a heavy note, combining trap and minimalist bass aesthetics in spectacular fashion while “pickle jack” and “I just Feel” further showcase Munchkin Cat's versatility. The former begins as a synthwave anthem before transitioning into to a mid-tempo sequence, while the second brings a subtle touch of glitch hop aesthetic to end the EP on a high note.
The transition from rock guitarist to dance music producer was marked by a commitment to storytelling through sound design. Since making the switch, Munchkin Cat has released five full-length albums and Algorithm makes it one of his strongest works to date.
“As a fan of dark fantasy and punchy bass, I wanted to bring these two worlds together on this EP,” said Munchkin Cat. “I put a lot of my own emotions into these tracks (happiness, anger, chills, even sadness) and together they make up the dark and funky world of this EP. My hope is that this passion reaches my listeners and that they feel as excited as I do creating this new hybrid sound.”
