Missy Elliott’s 1997 debut single, “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly),” was a rocket ship at launch and is now in outer space.
NASA has beamed “Supa Dupa Fly” to Venus, which NASA confirms is Missy Elliott’s favorite planet. The 254 million kilometer transmission was sent at the speed of light via NASA’s space probe. Deep Space Networkwhich is made up of a giant radio antenna array based in Barstow, California. Its radio signal took about 14 minutes to reach Venus.
Elliott’s song is not only the first hip-hop song sent into outer space, but it’s also the second song to receive that honor (appropriately enough) behind The Beatles’ “Across the Universe.”

“I still can’t believe I’m leaving this world with NASA via the Deep Space Network as “The Rain” (Supa Dupa Fly) becomes the first hip-hop song to be broadcast into space,” Elliott said. “I chose Venus because it symbolizes strength, beauty, and empowerment, and I’m so honored to have the opportunity to share my art and message with the universe!”
Brittany Brown, director of the Digital and Technology Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington, was the catalyst for the collaboration, saying in a statement: “Missy has a history of incorporating space-focused narratives and futuristic visuals into her music videos, so the opportunity to collaborate on something out of this world is truly fitting.”
Missy Elliott’s collaboration with outer space is a perfect fit, as she’s currently embarking on the futuristic sci-fi tour “Out of this World — The Missy Elliott Experience” alongside Busta Rhymes and Ciara, which is actually Elliott’s first headlining tour. The 2024 tour continues through July and August with shows in Houston, Tampa, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Boston, Brooklyn, Toronto, and more; see Missy Elliott’s 2024 tour dates here and purchase tickets. here.
