The pair dropped the studio version of the song, which appears on Smith's upcoming EP, early Thursday morning
Fresh win the New Male Artist trophy at the Academy of Country Music Awards, Nate Smith teamed up with Avril Lavigne to perform their new single, “Bulletproof“, on the show. The studio version of the song was released early Thursday morning.
“I been taking these shots, shots, shots, 80, 90, whatever,” they sing along on the chorus, “But whiskey don't kill like it's supposed to/Baby, your memory gotta be bulletproof. ” The pair ran across the stage for a rousing live debut of the new single. Lavigne was a natural, with the pop-punk star slotting into her country moment with ease.
The song, which appears on Smith's Through the Smoke The EP was originally released as a solo single in February with him drinking away his sorrows alone. “I tried to overcome the pain of a stretch in many different ways,” he said in a statement. “And I feel like the only thing that can really get you through it is time… That's kind of what the song is about. Trying your best to get over the pain of a crack, but you just can't.”
He had the idea to re-record it with Lavigne and screen-captured his lyrics sending the “Complicated” singer when he released the song the same day they performed at the ACMs. Of course, that was all posted on Instagram.
This isn't Lavigne's first foray into country music. At the 2022 ACM Awards, she presented the ACM Poet Laureate to Shania Twain and performed Twain's “No One Needs to Know.” And last summer Miranda Lambert welcomed Lavigne as a surprise guest at CMA Fest in Nashville, going on to perform “Sk8r Boi” and “Kerosene” together.
