Navy Blue, born Sage Elsesser, released a surprise album earlier this month.
Memoirs In Armour comes as the professional model and skateboarder-turned-rapper unceremoniously dropped from Def Jam, where he had released the project Ways of Knowing in 2023.
Fans were surprised to see that an underground favorite like himself would even sign to a major label, but Navy said album-memoirs-in-armour-independent-1235076927/” data-type=”link” href=”https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/navy-blue-new-album-memoirs-in-armour-independent-1235076927/” target=”_blank”>Rolling Stone recently that he was “grateful” for the experience. “And I think of course as a human being, you look back on situations and go, 'I wish things were different,' but I think the universe or God or whatever people want to call it — I choose to call it God — It's just he had a different plan for me and there was just something to learn from this experience.”
He also told the publication his status at the company inspired him to make and release this tape, telling them:Memories in armor it's in response to the fact that I left Def Jam in a way that disappointed me, to say the least.”
“Take Heed” is the intro track and was produced by Budgie, who also handled most of the production on Navy's only Def Jam release. The video, directed by Ryosuke Tanzawa, features Navy opening the curtains as he lets in the light and begins to reflect as he raps, “Another baby born, another life stolen/ To claim the day as your own, to see with open eyes/ He says he knows the truth, I know who lied to him.”
A few weeks ago, Navy released the single “Low Threshold” produced by Child Actor, with the video also directed by Tanzawa. You can check it out below.
