Nick Cave responded to a recent free tweet from Bob Dylan's newly active account, calling the experience “a wonderful pulse of joy.”
The original tweet shared via Dylan's account on Tuesday (November 19), and saw him reflect on Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' recent performance in France just two days earlier, specifically singling out the song 'Joy', from Cave's Australian Music Award- album nominee, wild God.
“I saw Nick Cave in Paris recently at the Accor Arena and was really blown away by this song Joy where he sings 'We've all had too much sadness, now it's time to be happy,'” Dylan wrote. “I thought to myself, yes, it is.”
The comment apparently reached Cave, himself a famous Dylan fan (having previously is reflected about the musician's work and existence covered numerous pieces from his extensive catalog). Taking in his sporadically-updated Red hand files website, Cave explained that he was unaware of Dylan's presence, but called the tweet “a wonderful pulse of joy that shot through my exhausted, zombie state.”
Continue. “I was glad to see Bob on X, as many on the Left had had a Twitterectomy and headed for Bluesky. It felt admirably twisted, in a Bob Dylan kind of way. I really felt it was a time for joy and not sorrow. There was a lot of hopelessness and despair around the election and one couldn't help but ask when the politics were done everything.
“The world had become utterly disillusioned, and its feverish obsession with politics and its leaders had created so many mishaps that it had prevented us from experiencing the presence of anything remotely like the spirit, the sacred, or the transcendent—that holy place where joy dwells. I felt proud to tour with the Bad Seeds and offer, in the form of a rock 'n' roll show, an antidote to that despair, taking people to a place beyond the horrific drama of the political moment.”
Cave closed by lamenting his ability to express gratitude to Dylan in person, instead choosing to use his own website to do so: “I was glad to think Bob Dylan was in the audience and because I doubt I'll get the chance to thank him personally, I will thank him here. Thanks, Bob!”
Dylan's Twitter account has become a source of intrigue in recent weeks, given its recent resurgence in activity and its apparent shift away from promotional messages to actual commentary from Dylan himself. Along with recommendations for New Orleans cuisine and a belated tribute to the late comedian Bob Newheart, Dylan has also sparked speculation about the identity of a mysterious woman named Mary Jo.
