Nicki Minaj doesn't let anyone play with her name. After expressing frustration with the NFL for overlooking Lil Wayne for the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show performer in favor of Kendrick Lamar, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith slammed the controversy story while he defended Jay-Z.
“Who else are you going to beef with. Lil Kim, Mariah Carey, Cardi B, Gucci Mane, Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato. Every time we shoot it's something, Nicky,” the sports commentator began Presented by Stephen A. Smith Thursday (September 12). “You disagree with the decision, you disagree with the decision. You need to talk [Jay-Z] so; And why are we talking about Jay-Z like he's a sellout or something?”
THE First Take The host continued: “You know how hard it is for a black person to pull off what Jay-Z has accomplished in terms of making sure that black people have that kind of center stage to promote their brand and build their profile . How insufferable can you be? It's not about you as an individual – it's about all of us as Black people. And that Jay-Z brother was front and center on the covers.
Minaj wasted no time getting back on the offensive, sharing harsh words with Smith on Thursday X when she essentially called him a sellout.
“Oh look yeah, another paid ridiculous alien coming off his knees only to turn around and step on them again. LMFAOOOOOOOOOO. Stefan, we don't care. I'll tell you right away. We don't care. If I say more it will be your fault. Sit tight,” she replied.
The rapper then appeared to sarcastically confuse Smith with his own First Take partner Shannon Sharpe, who accidentally went to Instagram Live while it became familiar earlier this week. He also lamented Smith's receding hairline.
“Stefan weren't you moaning and groaning live in your bedroom? LMFAOOOO. And since we're in the women's business here…ladies; When do men have to shave their entire heads,” she added, insultingly. “Should she go her normal course like SAS Sassy a– or should she look at the front laces?”
Lamar was announced as the Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show performer on Sept. 8, and Lil Wayne spoke publicly about the NFL's decision early Friday (Sept. 13), admitting that he was “hurt” that he wasn't selected.
“It hurt a lot. I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a disappointment. And because I automatically mentally put myself in that position, like someone told me that was my position,” he told his fans in a video he posted on Instagram. “So I blame myself for that. But I thought there was nothing better than this spot and that stage and that platform in my city, so I was in pain.”
