The queen of rap called out the people's princess.
Nicki Minaj held her Pink Friday 2 World tour at Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, UK on Sunday (May 26) when she took some time to chat with fans in the crowd. In a video circulating on social media, the rapper asks a group of fans where they are from. When they replied that they were from Wales, Minaj started speaking with a British accent.
“He always reminds me of a dear friend of mine,” Minaj noted. “Well, she's not here anymore, but the Princess of Wales is.”
Minaj then urged the crowd to observe a minute's silence for Princess Diana, who died tragically in a car crash in August 1997 aged 36. Although the duo weren't actually friends — the “Super Bass” rapper was just 14 when the English royal died — Minaj has made nods to Diana in the past. Most recently, she appeared on Ice Spice's 2023 track, “Princess Diana,” which includes the lyric, “Callin' my phone, but they know I don't answer/In the hood, I'm like Princess Diana.”
Last week, Minaj was released by police in the Netherlands just hours after recording her arrest by Amsterdam authorities for allegedly “carrying drugs”. As a result, the artist was forced to postpone her concert in Manchester as part of her Pink Friday 2 tour for June 3.
“Despite Nicki's best efforts to explore every possible avenue to make tonight's show happen, today's events have made it impossible,” promoter Live Nation tour-f7c05e8ce6ddfc5482dbe37ba368038a” target=”_blank”>he said in a statement on Saturday. “We are deeply disappointed by the inconvenience this has caused.”
