The group, led by singer Gwen Stefani, appeared for the first time Advertising signPop Airplay chart dated March 23, 1996, featuring “Just a Girl”. The sultry empowerment song — which builds from Stefani's “little old me” coo to his exasperated scream, “I've had up to he-re!” — became the band's first of three chart hits that year, peaking at No. 24 in April.
The ska-infused 'Spiderwebs' reached No. 11 on Pop Airplay in October. As that song peaked, developers had already teased the band's ballad “Don't Speak,” a more subdued choice for the format.
