Noah Weiland, son of the late Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, has unveiled a new song called “Time Will Tell” featuring his father's unreleased vocals. The younger Weiland claims that he decided to release the song after someone else threatened to release it in an extortion attempt.
In an Instagram post, Noah explained that he intended to keep the song until later in his singing career, but was forced to release it after the apparent threat of blackmail. He wrote:
“I can't believe I'm saying this now, but I've basically been blackmailed by a random number that somehow has a very old version of a song I have with my dad. And because of that, I'm basically forced to release a song that I had no intention of releasing until much later in my career because this coward thinks I'm about to send them $2k to not leak it. So, I beat them to it…funny enough, I saw 'TIME WILL TELL' written on the bathroom wall the day I got that text, maybe my dad thought it was about time? After years of struggling with addiction, homelessness, people hiding my dad's money, liars, traitors, growing up too fast, losing my brother Gio, old friends turned enemies, I've been through a lot, but the person I was years ago is FAR from who I am now. TIME WILL TELL ft @scottweiland [produced @spencercarrreed ] It is now AVAILABLE on YouTube.”
The song is an alt-pop tune in the vein of Noah's recent singles, with Scott's vocals taking center stage around the 2:35 mark. Noah further said Rolling Stone that “Time Will Tell” was originally a Scott Weiland solo song from a “super unfinished” demo.
In his Instagram post, Noah shared a screenshot of a text message from the apparent blackmailer, someone he's “almost sure” he can identify. “If I'm right, then it's one of my old best friends who's super jealous of me, so I'd rather let them sit and watch,” he further said. Rolling Stone.
Noah continued to criticize the distribution of his late father's music, saying, “Due to the fact that no one who 'represents' my father really cares about giving fans new unreleased music, much less keeping his name alive in the first place.” Instead, my friend Spencer Carr Reed and I decided to make it a more modern sounding song, like he was still alive and we decided to jump into one of my songs. “That was the concept behind it.”
He continued: “My family and certain people around me have always conditioned me to hate my father growing up. But after all this time I realized that it wasn't his fault and that he would never have let me go through all the chaos I had to go through these last few years of my life.
Previously, Weiland said Rolling Stone that he is “not a trust fund baby” and that his father was “millions in debt when he died.” Since that interview, it was announced that Primary Wave had acquired a partnership in Scott Weiland's musical catalog, including his work in Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, and his solo career. The monetary terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it was assumed that it would result in a windfall for Weiland's estate.
