Normani will not be performing at the BET Awards on Sunday. The singer took to her Instagram story shortly before the ceremony began, revealing that she had suffered an unspecified injury during rehearsals.
“I am more frustrated and disappointed than anyone gives me credit for. I just wanted to pop in here and give you an update to let you know that while I was rehearsing for BET I had a really bad accident and got injured.” she wrote. “Normally I'm good to cope under any circumstances, but unfortunately due to my doctor's orders, I just can't pull off this performance.”
Normani, who set free dopamineat the beginning of this month, he spoke to me Rolling rock ahead of the release of her highly anticipated debut album. In the interview, she discussed some of the issues that have prevented her from releasing music consistently since her Fifth Harmony days, including heartbreak, cancer treatments for both her parents, and outside scrutiny. But he has persevered and discussed the process of making an album.
“I naturally gravitate towards things that sound darker from a sonic perspective, something that feels like it has bite and grit and edginess. I always like being dropped off at the center,” he said. “At one point I thought, 'Listen, it can't all sound dark. We want to take them all for a ride. We need to add some color.' I love Missy Elliott so much Timbaland production. I like unique things that haven't necessarily been heard, so producing is my favorite part of the process. I'm honestly already thinking about what I want the show to look like. I'm excited to perform “Lights On.” This is my Janet's moment.”
In her Instagram post on Sunday, she said she was “devastated” to not be able to play, but would delay her recovery and focus on recovery.
“There's nothing more I wanted to do than play for you and also get back to what gives me the most satisfaction – BEING ON STAGE. Thank you so much for understanding,” she added, and also thanked BET “for the opportunity it gave me and all the other beautiful black women. It certainly was NOT how I envisioned this weekend, but I better believe I'll be championing everyone from home tonight.”
The BET Awards will include performances by Will Smith, Ice Spice, GloRilla, Ms. Lauryn Hill and & YG Marley, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey, Tyla and Victoria Monét. Megan Thee Stallion opened the show.
