Earlier that week, their debut album 'Definitely Maybe' was released (29 August 1994) and, shortly before going on stage in Belfast, the band discovered that the album had reached number 1 on the official chart. UK Albums. Fans who had traveled from all over Northern Ireland witnessed an unforgettable concert that would go down in local history.
David Neely was general manager and booker at the venue in 1994 and remembers the night of the Oasis concert: “They took to the stage at Limelight, Belfast, on Sunday 4 September. The concert was sold out for 500 people and tickets were only £6.75! Sunday week the debut album was released – the Limelight show was the right place, for the right band at the right time. I remember around 6.30pm (in the dark days before mobile phones) a call came into the office from Radio One, saying that the band had just hit number 1 in the album charts. It was a sight that thousands of people now claim were there; simply, a spectacle that is legendary in this area.”
Delivering a set full of attitude, deafening commentary and cold classics in waiting, the Manchester quintet transcended their initial potential and fans' feverish expectations. Oasis were on the verge of becoming one of the defining cultural forces in British music.
