Olivia Munn has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2023 and underwent a double mastectomy.
In a post on Instagram on Wednesday, Munn shared that: “In the last ten months I have had four surgeries, spent so many days in bed I can't even count them, and have learned more than ever about cancer, cancer treatment, and the hormones. “I could have imagined it.”
“Surprisingly, I've only cried twice,” Munn added. “I guess I didn't feel like there was time to cry. My focus narrowed and I postponed any emotions that might interfere with my ability to keep a clear mind.”
Munn said he had intentionally kept his diagnosis private until now because he “needed to catch his breath and get through some of the hardest parts before sharing it.”
The 43-year-old actress credited her OB-GYN with saving her life when she decided to calculate her breast cancer risk assessment score. If she hadn't, Munn would not have discovered her cancer until her next scheduled mammogram. “Because of that score, I was sent for an MRI, which led to an ultrasound, which then led to a biopsy. The biopsy showed that she had Luminal B in both breasts. “Luminal B is an aggressive, fast-moving cancer.”
Munn encouraged other women to learn from her experience and ask their doctors to calculate their own breast cancer screening risk scores.
He also thanked his partner, comedian John Mulaney, “for the nights he spent researching what each operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery to expect. For being there before I went to every surgery and being there when I woke up, always putting up framed photos of our little Malcolm so that he would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”
