During their respective appearances on BBC’s Radio 1 Live Lounge, the two musicians covered each other’s songs — and the recordings will now be pressed onto a 7-inch vinyl, available April 20
Record Store Day 2024 falls on Saturday, April 20 this year. It’s one day off from being the perfect Freaky Friday parallel for Olivia Rodrigo and Noah Kahan, who are planning the release of a 7-inch vinyl featuring their respective covers of each other’s songs.
In October 2023, Rodrigo tried on Kahan’s hit “Stick Season” during an appearance on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge. Her haunted house-themed spooky season performance leaned into the scariest scenario imaginable: thinking a bit too long about the past and everything you’ve had to leave behind. “And I saw your mom, she forgot that I existed,” Rodrigo sang, settling into Kahan’s melancholy. “And it’s half my fault, but I just like to play the victim.”
A few weeks later, Kahan mirrored Rodrigo as he performed the Guts deep cut “Lacy” for his own Live Lounge appearance. The song, which began as a poem in a class Rodrigo took at the University of Southern California, finds her toying with ideas of envy and inferiority.
“The song is so beautiful, and it highlights what I love so much about Olivia’s lyricism. It’s very dynamic and it just makes you feel an emotion we’ve all experienced before,” Kahan told BBC Newsbeat about the performance, adding: “I was hoping she wouldn’t see it in case it was bad. She’s going to find out eventually. I hope she likes it, I was so honoured by her and so inspired by her.”
Olivia Rodrigo “Stick Season”/Noah Kahan “Lacy” – FROM THE BBC RADIO 1 LIVE LOUNGE will be released on April 20 via Geffen/Mercury/Republic.
