Musician and actor Olly Alexander will represent the UK at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden in May next year.
The Years & Years frontman revealed the news live on BBC One on Saturday night during the Strictly Come Dancing Grand Final.
In a statement, the openly gay star explained that he has been a Eurovision fan since childhood.
Olly says: “I've loved watching Eurovision since I was little and I'm really excited to be taking part next year. As a young lad I've always looked forward to this incredible event of unbridled joy, the wonderful chaotic mix of musical styles, theatrical performances, of heartfelt emotion and humor.”
The 33-year-old singer's Eurovision song, which she co-wrote with Danny L Harle, will be revealed closer to the contest. However, he promised to “fly the flag for the UK in the most polite way”.
This year's event was held in Liverpool, as war-torn Ukraine was unable to host after the Kalush Orchestra won in 2022. Sweden's Loreen – who previously triumphed in 2012 – won.
The Eurovision Semi-Finals and Grand Final will take place on 7, 9 and 11 May 2024.
