Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard sits down with Kyle Meredith to talk about working with Andrew Watt, finding inspiration in The Cure, and (of course) the band's new album. Dark matter. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
The guitarist explains the joy of reconnecting with our 2022 Producer of the Year, Andrew Watt, and how it helped to record as they did in the group's early days. Dark matter join much faster than in 2022 Gigaton. Discussing how he approached his guitar work for the new material, Gossard talks about making space for himself with Watt and touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer in the studio mix. He also reveals that The Cure and U2 served as major influences for the album, and with U2 in mind, he explains why he doesn't want Pearl Jam to play The Sphere.
As the conversation looks to the future, Gossard also says he's ready to get back into the studio (!). “We are excited about the next steps. We're excited to make more music. I think this record was an energizing experience for everyone,” he says, noting that working with Watt “really made a difference.” “It would be great to do more… I would love to [punch out another record]. “I would love to start something, just record for three days and make some more songs.”
For now, however, Gossard and Pearl Jam are focused on their upcoming tour in support of Dark matter. Get tickets for those dates here.
