The Black Pacific, featuring Pennywise frontman Jim Lindberg, has announced its second album and first LP in 14 years, HERE COMES OUR WAVE.
Ahead of the September 20 release date, nearly 14 years after their 2010 debut, the band offered up the original lead single and opening track “I Think I'm Paranoid” (not a cover of the Garbage song of the same name).
According to the press release, the song reflects “post-9/11 anxieties and fears of the modern era” and fits perfectly into Lindberg’s melodic-punk style. Given the sonic similarities, it’s essentially an extension of Lindberg’s work in Pennywise, and considering the band hasn’t released an album since 2018, it’s a boon for dedicated fans of the skate-punk group.
“I’ve had this song for a while,” Lindberg said in a press release, “and it was about all the senseless violence, terrorism, government conspiracies, and division that makes you want to move to a desert island somewhere, but now I’ve updated it to include hate groups, militias, and global pandemics, so it’s basically just a panic attack set to distorted guitars at 120 beats per minute.”
All songs in HERE COMES OUR WAVELike The Black Pacific's debut, Lindberg wrote and performed the music alongside his longtime friend and recording partner, drummer Alan Vega. As Lindberg explained, the music was culled from a set of demos he'd recorded over the years, including songs that didn't fit into the context of Pennywise.
“I’ve been writing songs for Pennywise and various projects for many years, and I’ve amassed a catalog of hundreds of demos, literally boxes of cassette tapes from the past few decades,” Lindberg said. “Some of the songs weren’t right for Pennywise, and I worked on them with Alan from The Black Pacific, so it made sense to release them under that name.”
He continued: “I think the knee-jerk reaction will be to say it all sounds like Pennywise, but I wrote the music and lyrics for over half of every Pennywise album we did together after Jason [Thirsk] Our bassist passed away, so I think it's more accurate to say that Pennywise sounds like me, not the other way around! When I pick up an electric guitar, this is the music that comes out of me, no matter what name it comes out under.”
