Perry Farrell is hesitant about his second Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination for Jane's Addiction.
“I'd like people to see Jane in the same light as the adults, but that's about it,” she says. Advertising sign in the midst of the Horns, Thorns en Halos Farewell tour by Porno For Pyros, his other band with Jane drummer Stephen Perkins. “I'm not really into trophies. I always felt like I was on my own island. It's nice to be considered, (but) I'm not so sure I belong there.”
A pioneer of the alternative rock scene, Jane's Addiction was previously nominated for the Rock Hall in 2017. The group's fourth and most recent studio album, The Great Escape Artist, was released in 2011 and has released two live albums since then, in 2013 and 2017. A non-album single, “Another Soulmate”, was released in 2013. The band toured in 2022 and 2023 with original bassist Eric Avery back in the lineup but not guitarist Dave Navarro, who was battling the effects of long COVID. The group is reportedly in the studio working on new material.
Asked if people want to vote for him, Lollapalooza co-creator Farrell replied: “That's up to you. If you're going to do it, check the Cher box.” He also expressed his support for an eventual introduction for the MC5, which has been proposed six times. Jane's is currently ranked 12th in the fan voting for the Rock Hall. Public voting can be done via vote.rockhall.com.
Rock Hall concerns are currently on the back burner while Farrell and Perkins tour the country with Porno For Pyros — including original guitarist Peter DiStefano but with Mike Watt subbing in for Martyn LeNoble.
“We just play slick, funky, unpredictable punk jazz,” Farrell says of the shows, which mix songs from the band's two studio albums with the recently released 'Agua' and 'Little ME' and the occasional cover. “We finish the job by spreading a good message. I think we're going to spread a message that I think people really need right now — not tomorrow. When we go out and play porn, I feel like we can relate and inspire people through music. It's the best experience that can happen to you.”
Farrell adds that despite the name of the tour, this may not be the last we see of Porno For Pyros. “It really depends on what's going down,” he says. “If we all enjoy each other, not only each other's company, but each other's musicianship, how we play on stage…. This is the most important thing. I see porn as work. I have projects that I am doing in my life. Porn is very important. I would say never.”
