Pharrell's Piece by Piece The documentary is set to be released on October 11 and features his innovative storytelling on the silver screen, but in LEGO form. Skateboard P revealed on Variety In a recent interview, when he asked his famous friends like Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg for permission to clean up their photos in the documentary, he left out one key detail: that they would appear as LEGOs.
“We deliberately didn't tell anyone that this was going to be the final product,” he said. “We wanted people to just answer the questions and really give their full, raw reactions to the opportunity to do the interviews.”
Pharrell continued: “Because if we said, 'Okay, this is going to be in LEGO,' then people would have kind of twisted what they were saying. … We didn't want them to be influenced by what we wanted. We wanted the purest part. And I feel like part of the magic of what makes this movie come out the way it does is because it's so alive and unscripted.”
In addition to Hov and Snoop, fans can expect guest appearances from key figures in P's career including Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pusha T, Gwen Stefani and more.
The wacky creative has defended his decision to use animated LEGOs as a storytelling medium as he expanded the depths of his imagination as he grew older.
“I was given LEGO sets as a kid and that was a really amazing platform for me to let my imagination run wild and learn things about myself, as it is for most kids and for a lot of people – millions and millions of people in this the planet,” he added.
Jay and Pharrell have a decorated collaborative history that includes Billboard Hot 100 hits like “I Just Wanna Love You,” “Frontin,” “APESHIT” and more.
