We think it's safe to say that 2024 hasn't been very kind to Drake as Kendrick Lamar basically turned a large part of the culture against the Canadian singer/rapper, but before that Drizzy was involved in a heated battle with Pusha T and his former producer. , Pharrell caught a wild stray as a result.
In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Pharrell was asked about a Drake “diss” in 2023 when the King of the North threatened to melt some of Skateboard P's fancy jewelry he bought after Pharrell sold over $1 million worth of his personal items. In his guest appearance on Travis Scott's track MELTDOWN in 2023, Drake threatened to melt down some of Pharrell's signature chains and tracks saying “Man, f*ck all that spinning' the narrative sh*t / I melt down the chains that I bought from your boss / Talk about all that heritage.”
While we Drake followed through on his threat, Pharrell doesn't seem too concerned with what might have happened to his old jewelry anyway. When asked if he was phased when he found out Drake was buying his old frozen tracks, Pharrell gave an honest answer and explanation behind it.
Per GQ:
No, because I believe that beyond all the current, at the heart of it all, he is a music lover. He's a fan of the history of what it is, and I happen to be a part of it, and these artifacts are a part of it.
And then when he was rapping about melting the jewelry and saying, “Come take his inheritance from my house” and all that, how did you feel about that?
He didn't.
Didn't that impress you?
No.
It's interesting that these things weigh you down, you get rid of them, someone else takes them over, and what they mean to them—I guess that's for them to decide?
Or not. I guess some things are just not for me to understand. When you let things go, a huge part of it is actually letting go. Not just the physical object, but leave your connection to what it is supposed to mean or the memory. You literally let them go. That was the purpose. It's like when people sell something and say, “I just want to make sure you take care of it because this is my baby.” And I say “No, no, no.” That's not my baby. That's why I leave it.
One can only hope that he reaches the level of zen that Pharrell has seemingly reached. I'm just saying,
Although Drake has been rocking Pharrell tracks as recently as his “Family Matters” video, he could have melted a track or two since then to make a point. Again, why would he? Could Drizzy be that petite? We'll probably have to wait and see.
