French bands Phoenix and Air will perform at the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday, August 11.
The two Versailles-based groups helped open the Olympic Games with a special concert at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport on July 17: together with Étienne de Crécy and Izzy Lindqwister, Phoenix and Air performed on the roof of Terminal 1, serving as a pre-Olympic summer party as well as a commemoration of the airport’s 50th anniversary.
Now, after the Olympics’ grand opening ceremony featured performances by Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Gojira, Aya Nakamura and dozens of others, the closing ceremony will feature even more spectacle. In addition to French Touch legends Phoenix and Air, Tom Cruise will reportedly perform a stunt at the Stade de France. The Parisian confirms that Cruise will be part of the handover that symbolizes the transition between Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028, and includes images captured in Paris over the past few months.
Both Phoenix and Air are commemorating some important anniversaries in 2024, making their appearances at the 2024 Olympics all the more festive. Phoenix has been remembering the 15th anniversary of their seminal fourth album Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with performances at Just Like Heaven, Primavera Sound and a few other festivals; we even caught up with Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz of the band backstage at Just Like Heaven to talk about the making of the album and its impact.
Meanwhile, Air is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its 1998 album. Lunar Safari With a North American tour in the fall, where they will play the entire album. The tour begins in late September and runs through October; buy tickets here.
