Following a spectacular performance during the Olympic closing ceremony, Phoenix has released a new remix of Kavinsky's song “Nightcall” featuring Belgian vocalist Angèle. Listen to it below.
Originally written by Kavinsky and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk, “Nightcall” was first released in 2010 and appeared in the title sequence of Ryan Gosling's film. DriveDuring the closing ceremony in Paris, Phoenix premiered the reimagined version with Belgian star Angèle, which they have now officially recorded and released for streaming.
Building on the original song's intensity and humor, Phoenix member Thomas Mars' vocals intertwine with Angèle's in and out of the chorus to haunting effect. The tempo is also slightly faster than the 2010 song, but the remix retains hints of 1980s synths and vocoders.
After the song premiered live during the most-watched Olympic closing ceremony in history, “Nightcall” broke the record for the most Shazams in a single day, reaching over one million searches.
This spring, the French rockers celebrated the 15th anniversary of their album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and joined Consequence's Paolo Ragusa looks back at the LP. Revisiting the interview.
