Later this year, singer/songwriter Andrea von Kampen is set to return with her upcoming third LP, Sister Moon, out March 15. Fans last heard von Kampen in 2021 with her sophomore album, This spellas well as the 2022 soundtrack for the independent film A chance encounterwhich also saw von Kampen make her acting debut.
Sister Moon finds von Kampen in a meditative and naturalistic mood, inspired by environmental themes The Hyperstory by Richard Powers and the writings of St. Francis of Assisi. Both works reflect humanity's relationship with the earth, as well as the spiritual connection between all living beings that inhabit it. Suitably, Sister Moon feels equal parts earthy and spiritual, anchored by von Kampen's intricate guitar work and elevated by her bright melodies.
Von Kampen already shared a number of new singles from the record last year, and today she's back with another new track, “A Fox, A Bird,” premiering on Under the Radar.
“A Fox, A Bird” is a lovely acoustic folk song, surrounded by the lonesome guitar tones and von Kampen's haunting vocals. Even more so than the previous singles on the record, the track takes on a bright, springtime warmth, drenched in pastoral sunlight and sweet melodies. Meanwhile, von Kampen's lyrics take a similarly optimistic and empathetic view of the world, condensing the track's themes into its final moments: “I think the world started with love / And we don't have a problem to solve.”
Von Kampen says of the track, “'A Fox, A Bird' is a song I wrote that stands up to the evil that Western Christianity has done to many people. While writing this album, I was very influenced by the alternative orthodoxy of St. Francis of Assisi and my understanding of the religion I grew up with changed. In this song I mention my friend Bonnie who passed away unexpectedly a few years ago. Bonnie was an open-minded, kind-hearted person who owned a bed and breakfast in a small town in Nebraska when I met her. As I look back on my time with her, I realize that she understood how to live well and generously in a way that many people do not. This song is about the people, the animals, the earth and the divine nature that we all have within us. And as Bonnie said at the end, 'It's all love'.”
