Under the moniker brother bird, indie singer/songwriter Caroline Glaser debuted in 2018 with her self-titled EP and followed it up in 2021 with her first full-length album. gardens, which conjures up a set of gauzy and melodic songwriting touches and weaves them into poignant lyrical confessions. Most recently, Glaser returned last year with a string of new singles, teasing her upcoming sophomore album, another time. The full record will be released later this week, and ahead of the album's release, Glaser shares a final single, “quitter,” to be premiered with Under the Radar.
The record's previous singles found Glaser occupying familiar territory, offering shades of nostalgia, raw lyrical musings, and even glimpses of sublime melodic bliss. Instead, “quitter” hits harder, supporting Glaser's shimmering vocal tone with rumbling bass, heavy guitars and heavy percussion. Rather than intimate or elaborate, the results feel shadowy and tenuous, laced with an unsettling undercurrent. At the same time, Glaser also dresses the track in soaring harmonies and horn blasts, giving the track a sense of contrast and understated catchiness that runs alongside the magnetic grooves.
Glaser says of the track, “This song has a bit more groove than the rest of the record – which I think is important. He recovered very quickly. I actually wrote it on the piano at the same time I wrote “something better”… they have similar feelings. Jake Cochran (Illiterate Light) and Tim Bruns came and watched it with me a few days later. It was basically just me singing whole notes on a piano… that floated around the melody. I'm still figuring out the structure of the song. Be comfortable with it. They had a lot of space to fuck and try different things. I knew I wanted some kind of horn, and I knew I wanted it to sound pretty big and kind of mean. I couldn't have picked better guys to experiment with. We all felt that day that we had something really strange and special. Excited for people to finally hear it”
