Call Me Spinster is an indie pop trio from Chattanooga Tennessee, formed by sisters Amelia, Rachel and Rosalie. The trio debuted in 2020 with their self-titled debut EP, blending hints of folk instrumentation and heavenly harmonies with a colorful indie pop lineup, all co-produced with Drew Vandenberg (of Montreal, Faye Webster, Toro y Moi). Since then, they've been juggling the band and co-parenting while crafting their forthcoming full-length, Pits.
For Pits They once again teamed up with Vanderberg on production while further expanding their band and sound, bringing in Rachel's collaborator Luis Alfredo Fortin on guitar and John Hooker on drums. The results are further influenced by the band's affinity for live synth pop and dance music, an element that is on full display with the record's new single, “Feet Are Dirty.” To accompany the track, the band also shared a new video for “Feet Are Dirty,” which premieres with Under the Radar.
“Feet Are Dirty” begins as a simmering and restrained sound system, but steadily unfolds into a shimmering dance pop sprawl, joined by swaying synth textures and a propulsive beat. Emphatic guitar strums and pounding accented percussion blast the sky, only to later trade this blissful reverie for a kaleidoscopic swirl of ambient. It feels like the instrument is in constant motion, yet the vocals also maintain a soft, hushed tone, balancing the bright tones with hints of unsettled longing.
As the band explain, this same contrast plays out in the track's themes, which see the trio pondering the joy and confusion of newfound home. Amelia explains, “Most of the songs on this album come from the very early stages of marriage and motherhood. One of the themes is the disorienting feeling of stumbling into the new, consumerist identity of a homebody. So much weariness, so many endless piles of mundane tasks and minutiae and idle time, but also technicolor joy. I feel incredibly stuck and incredibly in love at the same time. “Feet Are Dirty,” like many songs on the album, is at once a celebration of the moment, a mom-pop ode to Robyn and the '90s dance music we love, and a fantasy of escape to a more intimate version of ourselves. .”
