Next month, Vermont-based singer/songwriter Hannah Frances is set to share her third full-length album, Guardian of the Shepherd. She debuted in 2018 with her album, White Buffalofollowed by her attempt in 2021, Background. Her latest album finds her once again harkening back to the progressive and avant-garde strains of popular music, creating tracks that churn with hypnotic acoustics, densely layered arrangements and a gorgeous lyrical voice. He's already shared a number of new singles from the album this year, and today he's back with the title track, premiering on Under the Radar.
“Keeper of the Shepherd” gallops forward over driving drums, flawless guitar and wandering bass lines, taking on both propulsive country beats and a mystical folk sheen. Frances' vocals are the warm and authentic centerpiece, towering over the instrumentals. As the song progresses, spectral pedal steel shimmers through the mix, with the track dropping into a token jazz finale in its final moments. Meanwhile, Frances unravels themes of loss, faith and self-discovery, meditating on the self above all else: “I can't live without me / I can't hold on without me / I can't love you without me / I can't be without me .”
The press release says of the piece, “Guardian of the Shepherd, the eponymous and intense new single from Hannah Frances, is a repetition of revelations about dominance. Frances fuses the lyrical archetype with her idiosyncratic and percussive guitar playing to name the hard truths of her life. An impressive, captivating journey, Frances finds her way to liberation in the end.”
