New York-based indie singer/songwriter JW Francis debuted 2020 with his first full-length, We share a similar joyquickly followed by the second album in 2021 WANDERKID, and last year's album, Dream house. This fast-paced release schedule saw Francis drift into a warm and charming style of dream pop, enjoying loose beats, laid-back vocal melodies and heavy production. Today, he continues his streak of releases with another new single, “Turtleneck Weather,” premiering on Under the Radar.
'Turtleneck Weather' sees Francis channeling a quirky folk style, carried by acoustic guitar, sharp hooks and sunny harmonies. Francis strikes a careful balance between laid-back vibes and frenzied energy, delivering his vocals in a Dylan outfit punctuated by playful growls and catchy guitar lines. As the song progresses, relaxed synth sounds take the track in an intimate new direction, closing it in a moment of sweet, settled peace. The track is perfect for the weather title, combining Francis' sunny mood with an understated sense of calm and comfort.
Francis says of the track, “I wrote 'Turtleneck Weather' shortly after hiking the Appalachian Trail. I walked 1500 miles in 4 months and it changed my life. In a way, I was looking to get back to myself. Get out so I can get in. Mainly, after the pandemic, I needed to take a long walk outside. This song is about the purity of those intentions, I just want to be a good person. Sometimes you have to do crazy things to feel normal.”
