This week, indie singer/songwriter Lola Wild shares her debut EP, get up. The record finds Wild fusing indie, folk and dream pop together with a resonant vintage flare, drawing from a similar well of influences to artists such as Angel Olsen, Indigo de Souza or Sharon Van Etten. Last year, Wild shared the record's lead singles, “Rendezvous” and “Here I Go,” a duet with singer/songwriter Robert Chaney, and today she's back with an early listen of the title track, premiering with Under the Radar.
“Get Up” finds Wild caught between aching melancholy and dreaminess. Her understated vocals imbue the track with a luscious undercurrent, singing over a mix of heavy guitars and a languid rhythm section. The results seem like a marriage of folk and Americana tones with warm indie rock instruments, all tied together with Wild's reflective lyrical voice. He confesses, “I've never been able to fix my mistakes or tell a promise from a lie / My troubles are over / I just don't have time / so much that I could say / It's easier to get up and walk away. ”
Wild says of the song, “This track is an ode to my little youth. Like most young people, you do and say what you think is necessary to shut out certain aspects of life, I guess. It finally got to the point where I had to get up, move on and get my things in order. It's also an audio look at a lot of angst I caused at the time. I struggle with being present, 'happy' and being mentally somewhere else, affected by my obsession with the paradox of the sad clown – the contradiction between outward appearance and inner feelings, hiding true feelings behind a facade of happiness.”
