In the great pantheon of musicians who transcend beyond mere “celebrity” status, the late MICHAEL HUTCHENCE dominates the majority. A consummate “rock star” if ever there was one, he embodied the spirit and fiery swagger of rock 'n' roll while also possessing one of the most iconic voices on the contemporary music scene.
So, it was with a shocking shudder that he tragically passed away in 1997, leaving behind an astonishingly impressive legacy across the realm of entertainment. What many didn't know, however, is that he left some of his brilliance behind in the form of unreleased music. Producer, musician and personal friend DANNY SABER (Madonna, Rolling Stones, U2) has completed some of these musical pieces to continue and expand the impact of Hutchence. New single “ONE WAY” is released today, April 5, 2024 via Boss Sonics.
“'One Way' is the culmination of nearly two decades of work,” Saber says. “One of the fundamental reasons for releasing this music is to allow fans to hear Michael's voice in something new and fresh, offering a glimpse into what could have been and, in turn, waking up millions of people who may have simply They had forgotten about him. .”
“Michael first contacted me in 1995, shortly after the release of my album It's Great When You're Straight,” Saber recalls, referring to his band Black Grape's UK number one album with Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder. “Michael was a big fan of my album and wanted to find the right sound for a solo album, a sound that would galvanize all the success he had with INXS and allow him to establish himself as a solo artist and spread his creative wings outside the world. He borders on being the leader of one of the most successful bands in the world.”
Working closely with Hutchence, the two became friends and creative partners. “Over the next two years, we became very close collaborators and the period we worked together was one of the best times of my life.” Know remember. “I had just achieved a number one record and having Michael as a 'big brother' to help me get through this was very important to me.”
Before he died in 1997, a self-titled solo album was released posthumously two years later. Although that seemed to be the end of his musical output, a trove of unreleased demos and song ideas resurfaced in a tape locker in London in 2006. “I started reviewing the recordings to see if they were of sufficient quality for some kind of release,” Saber says. Meanwhile, a documentary about Hutchence's life, appropriately titled The Last Rockstar (2017), was released in Australia and New Zealand, which included some fragments of these unfinished tracks. “I have been working for more than 20 years to bring this music to the public,” he adds. “While parts of these songs appeared in the documentary, the fully mastered versions were never released.” Until now.
Taking one of the a cappella vocal recordings Hutchence left behind, Saber faithfully developed and shaped the song into “One Way,” ensuring it retained the heightened refinement Hutchence demanded in life. “Michael and INXS set a really high standard for their music.” he explains. “I've said many times that it would be difficult to find a bad INXS song… a certain level of excellence had to be maintained!”
With a legacy that spans four decades, starting with iconic multi-platinum band INXS, who have sold over 50 million albums worldwide, effectively making them the biggest-selling Australian group of all time. times, as well as his solo projects, including short films. He lived but loved the side project Max Q and also starred in films like Dogs in Space and Frankenstein Unbound, Hutchence was an unbridled talent whose cultural significance knew few limits. Even in death, his impact continues.
“One of the best things for me personally is that throughout this journey I have come to better understand what happened to Michael and why.” he says, referring to the emotional and tragic toll that fame and its excesses took on Hutchence. “I want to share that perspective because I really feel that Michael's story has a lot of relevance and value on many levels and, along the way, I hope we can shift the focus to how he lived and not how he died. “Michael deserves to take his place in the pantheon of great leaders and finally get the recognition he and the band deserve.”
