Track by Track is our recurring series where artists guide readers through each song on a release. Today, Raffaella embarks on her new EP, LIVE, RAFF, LOVE (Act II).
Indie pop composer and Consequence CoSign Raffaella has released a new EP, LIVE, RAFF, LOVE (Act II)a continuation of 2022 ACT I PE. Larger and darker, the second act functions as a shadow to the light of the first act, creating a dialogue between them. Yeah Act I It was a revolution Act II It's a revelation.
Every song in LIVE, RAFF, LOVE (Act II) acts as a companion piece to its respective counterpart from the previous EP, and each combination of songs has its own overarching theme. Some touch on more abstract ideas like love and adulthood, while others get more complex and detailed, like learning to speak up for yourself despite expectations of being the ideal woman. On the hyperpop anthem “POLLY POCKET,” for example, Raffaella attempts to capture the anger sparked by the overturning of Roe V. Wade. “I really don't know how else to say it, other than suddenly my body has become what surrounds my IUD,” she explains.
Watch the new video for “POLLY POCKET” below and read on for Raffaella's full track-by-track breakdown. LIVE, RAFF, LOVE (Act II).
Starting next month, Raffaella will embark on her first headlining tour, “Live, Raff, LIVE!” Get tickets here.
Love: “Come to New York, please” -> “Gush:”
The prospect of falling in love (“Come to nyc, pls”) becomes the reality of having fallen in love (“Gush”). Act I's love song shows optimism despite any possible humiliation (mouth open smiling with “hope stuck in my teeth”). Act II's grabs the wheel and speeds forward: “I could spend my whole life loving you / Hey, can you teach me how to drive?”
I was afraid to imagine the possibility of losing something before I had the opportunity to experience it; It's even scarier to catch it and hope it never wants to let go.
Avoidance/Delusion: “BUICK” —> “Fcking Smiling:”
In “BUICK” I chose perpetual delirium, partly because this is someone who didn't care about losing and, for him, maturity seemed unjustified. “Fcking Smiling,” however, faces the consequences of avoidance after a fight with someone who means a lot to me. The first is a breakup; The second is a heartbreak.
Whoever thought 'ignorance is bliss' (“BUICK”) woke up and realized that ignorance can quickly turn into hell (“Fcking Smiling”).
