Three months after debuting the song during her 2024 Brits, RAYE has finally unveiled 'Genesis', a soulful seven-minute epic that leads into a four-track EP that is her first new music. This year.
To top off the year, RAYE made history at Brits 2024 when she broke the record for most wins (6) and nominations (7) for an artist in a single year. In addition to the trophies for Best New Artist, Best R&B Act, British Female Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year, RAYE also triumphed in British album of the Year for her acclaimed debut LP. My 21st Century Blues — which peaked at No. 58 on the Billboard 200 — and Song of the Year for the Shake 070-assisted “Escapism,” which peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In an Instagram on May 31 PositionRAYE described 'Genesis' as 'a 7-minute labor of love [she has] working from 2022.” Produced by two-time Grammy winner Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, “Genesis” unfolds over three acts through which RAYE delivers some of her most visceral and confessional songs to date. From shuffling strings and triumphant horn to influences that include big band jazz, hip-hop, R&B, gospel and pop, “Genesis” reveals itself to be more than just a typical radio single, giving her one last dig before she prepares for the road ahead, the new single by RAYE is a great introduction to her next era.
“I see a sad sinner, in the mirror/ The devil is hard at work, like my liver/ I don't want to live, but I don't want to die/ A fist full of pills and rivers in my eyes,” croons on the chorus. “I've got nothing to lose, dear God in heaven/ Hear my cry, hear my cry/ When it's too dark to see/ Let there be light, let there be light.”
Since her UK appearance, RAYE have been steadily teasing their new song in special pop-up activations and subsequent live sets. He performed 'Genesis' on the final shows of the My 21st Century Blues tour as well Saturday night live musical guest debut (April 6). The “Prada” singer has officially announced the single's May 17th release date. Earlier this week (June 3), he hosted the Genesis Show in New York to further promote the new song.
