Redman couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the first six-figure publishing check for Christina Aguilera's “Dirrty” in 2002.
The New Jersey rapper was blown away by the staggering amount and revealed Red Bull Spiral earlier this week it was actually for more than $250,000 and ended up being one of his favorite collaborations of his career.
“Christina is like one of my favorite collaborations because I did a song called 'Let's Get Dirty' with DJ Kool — what's up, Uncle Kool?” explained about the inspiration for the collaboration. “And she liked that, so she did an R&B-pop version of that record. So I got into the record and after that, it took off. We've been everywhere bro. He brought me on tour.”
Redman appreciated having the opportunity to hit the road with Xtina and see how a pop icon moved through the industry.
“This album [Stripped] was one of her biggest albums. We were all over the place and I understood how a pop artist moves and moves in this industry, and it's another level than hip-hop. And plus my editorial control,” he continued. “Oh my God! My publishing check, n—a? I couldn't believe I got that much money for a verse. It was over $250,000, my first check.”
“Dirrty” was the lead single from Aguilera's 2002 album, Nakedwhich also included hits like “Beautiful” and “Fighter”. Dave LaChapelle jumped behind the camera to direct the “Dirrty” video, and the platinum hit was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 2003 Grammy Awards.
The track ended up at No. 48 of the Billboard Hot 100, while Naked debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
