Richard Hawley today released the video for his new single, 'Prism In Jeans'. The video was filmed in the center of Hawley's beloved Sheffield, in the shadow of the Moore Street substation, which features prominently on the cover of his upcoming album, 'In This City They Call You Love'.
In the video, a group of students from Sheffield's Bailey-Cox Dance Academy dance happily wearing colorful scarves to represent the prism mentioned in the song, while a worker recognizable in the distance arrives to sit on a nearby bench and observe this show.
'Prism In Jeans' is a Hawley classic, a beautiful song that evokes his great love and inspiration for the remembered ghostly sound of transatlantic rock and roll before The Beatles ushered in the rock era.
“I love the music of that pre-Beatles era. The Telstar Tornadoes and The Shadows”, says Ricardo. “That kind of distant underworld. I've always loved that moment, whether it's right or not. As a song, it's about someone who is like a rainbow in a very small space. “A prism in jeans.”
The song is from the upcoming album. In this city they call you love, published on May 31. The album includes 12 standout songs, which are among some of the best ballads Hawley has ever written and recorded. Sumptuous melodies and arrangements are accompanied by Hawley's emotive and sonorous voice, which sounds better than ever, in an album that further confirms his place as one of the best songwriters of his generation, in a highly successful recording career that is approaching at 25 years old.
The album's title is taken from the song 'People', which could well be the best song Hawley has ever written about his beloved Sheffield, the city's proud industrial past and the enduring determination of its citizens.
“I made three albums where I had the title before I even started recording, where I had an agenda. One was the Truelove spout. Another one was Standing At The Sky's Edge when I wanted to turn everything up and make the music much more aggressive, and then this one. I wanted it to be multicolored in some way…focusing on the vocals and what the voices can do together…I deliberately only played a handful of guitar solos to keep focused on the vocals, the song and the space…” –Richard Hawley.
In this city they call you love It will premiere on May 31.
