Last year it was rumored that Marvel planned to bring back the OG Avengers team of Iron Man, Captain America and Thor to help revive the popularity of their struggling MCU, and although Marvel boss Kevin Feige poured cold water on the idea, Robert Downey Jr. he would be more than happy to return as Tony Starks in future Marvel projects.
In a recent interview with esteemed sirthe Oscar-winning actor was asked about reviving the late Marvel character, and much to the surprise of many, Downey raised eyebrows when he said “Thankfully. It's very much part of my DNA. This role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever against Kevin Feige. It's a losing bet. He's home. He's always going to win.”
Unfortunately, it looks like Feige isn't looking at Iron Man's return any time soon, as everyone knows that such an event wouldn't happen until Avengers: Secret Wars which is set to hit theaters in 2027 or 2028. Until then, Marvel Studios will be building anticipation for the historic crossover event that is said to feature Marvel superheroes from past films such as Tobey McGuire's Spider-Man, Wolverine Hugh Jackman and even rumors that Nicholas Cage will be reprising his role as Ghost Rider for the upcoming spectacle.
Even though both Ghost Rider movies struggled, it would be great to see Cage as the Spirit of Vengeance. I am just saying.'
Hugh Jackman is even said to have told Kevin Feige that he would only do it Secret Wars if he had screen time with both Tobey McGuire as Spider-Man and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. All the more reason for Feige to go ahead with Iron Man's return.
But again, these are all rumors, as Marvel needs some solutions to generate interest in the future of its highly profitable cinematic universe, which has declined in both popularity and box office receipts in recent years.
What do you think? Should Marvel be bringing back Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man sooner rather than later? Should they leave the character alone and move on? Let us know in the comments section below.
