Robert Fripp and Toyah Willcox offered a Halloween edition of their “Sunday Lunch” series over the weekend. The video shows the married couple performing a cover of the David Bowie classic “Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).”
The King Crimson guitarist and new wave singer have been mostly releasing archival episodes of “Sunday Lunch” in recent months, but Bowie's cover is a completely new interpretation. In the video, both Fripp and Toyah wear makeup inspired by the Scary monsters album cover, with Toyah looking eerily similar to Bowie.
Aside from the makeup, Toyah sports a black jacket with nothing underneath, singing the 1980 song while Fripp plays the guitar. The video ends with Robert saying in a creepy voice, “Welcome to Toyah and Robert's scary 'Sunday Lunch,'” with Toyah playfully kissing the progressive rock pioneer on the side of his head.
New editions of the “Sunday Lunch” series are few and far between these days, but Toyah and Robert have offered fun covers of The Stooges’ “Search and Destroy,” Blink-182’s “Dammit,” “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” and KISS’ “Lick It Up,” among other songs, over the past year.
Toyah and Robert will be playing a short run of “Christmas Party” shows in the UK in December, with tickets available here.
Meanwhile, Fripp has given his blessing to the current North American “BEAT” tour, with classic King Crimson members Adrian Belew and Tony Levin playing alongside guitar virtuoso Steve Vai and Tool drummer Danny Carey, while reinterpreting three of Crimson's 80s albums: Discipline, Defeatand Three of a perfect couple. The tickets for that departure are available here.
